You’re daydreaming about rocking your new bikini on the beach next summer, but there are a few more choices to make before you’re swimsuit-ready. A breast augmentation can give you a curvy, feminine body that will fill out your bikini perfectly.
One of the most important choices (after the decision to undergo a breast augmentation) is deciding on a type of implant. Gummy bear, silicone, and saline are three different kinds of implants that all have different benefits. Which one of these options can help you meet your appearance goals? Read on to learn more about gummy bear implants vs. silicone vs. saline.
Gummy Bear Breast Implants
Form-stable implants are also called “gummy bear” breast implants. These implants are firmer than traditional silicone implants. Filled with highly cohesive silicone, the consistency of the silicone gel implant is thicker than traditional silicone implants.
Gummy bear breast implants can be rounded or shaped, meaning they have more projection at the bottom and are more tapered toward the top. This gives the breast a gently sloping look. Both round and shaped implants can look very natural under the expertise of a talented plastic surgeon.
Silicone Breast Implants
Many women report that silicone breast implants are the most natural type of implant. They consist of a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel, which is a thick, sticky fluid. Silicone breast implants are typically a round shape with a fuller top portion of the breast. All of these factors make the implant look and feel like natural breast tissue.
Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 22 and older and in breast reconstructions for women of any age.
If you choose silicone implants, you’ll need to have regular follow-up appointments with your plastic surgeons. During these appointments, your plastic surgeon will check to make sure the implants are functioning properly. You may need an ultrasound or MRI screening to ensure the implants are still in good condition.
Saline Breast Implants
This type of breast implant is composed of a silicone outer shell that’s filled with saline, which is sterile salt water. Some saline breast implants are pre-filled and others are inserted empty and filled during a breast augmentation. This type of breast implant gives a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. Like silicone breast implants, saline breast implants are usually round.
Saline breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 18 and older and for reconstruction in women of any age.
