Breast cancer can be devastating in many ways. Not only is there the stress of having a dangerous mass intruding in one’s body, but there is additionally the worry of being left with deformity post-operation which poses a threat to the sense of identity and comfort of the patient. The Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction (commonly referred to as OBS) is the perfect application of a plastic surgery technique to a cancer operation, and allows women to preserve and improve breast appearance. Applying breast reduction surgical techniques, a tumor is removed leaving the rest of the breast tissue to be rearranged into a perfect shape in one safe, swift operation. Despite the invasiveness of breast cancer, oncoplastic reconstruction allows eligible patients more confidence in the tumor removal process and a beautifully healthy result using the remaining breast tissue.
By applying breast reduction to a lumpectomy operation, a general surgeon would feel more comfortable removing greater amounts of breast tissue. This ensures a better chance of removing the entire tumor in one operation. Final results by a plastic surgeon are aesthetically pleasing, and the rearrangement of tissue fills any gaps from the removal of tumors making healing easier. If radiation is required post-surgery, the breasts will be smaller which allows radiation to be more precise and less damaging.
Dr. Madry often reflects that many of his happiest patients after an operation are those who received a breast reduction. He says, “imagine how relieved a cancer patient would feel by taking a tumor out and having a great reconstruction in one procedure.” With an Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction, patients enter the operating room, and can leave with the confidence that their lumpectomy and reconstruction were completed with one smooth operation. All of the incredible benefits of breast reductions (including but not limited to lessened back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, increased mobility, increased confidence) are included in this form of reconstruction, plus the immeasurable bonus of cancer removal. Patients may even go home the same day.
To be eligible for an Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction, individuals must also be deemed eligible for a lumpectomy based on breast size, tumor size, and tumor characteristics. This should be discussed in further detail with one’s doctor.
